YouTube doesn't provide a way to get a truly random video out of their likely more than 15 Billion videos, not influenced by their algorithm.

But if we had a decently sized list of YouTube video IDs of our own, we could run a random selection on that. Luckily, the YouTube Archive Team exists and got 4.5 Billion videos in 2021, when YouTube disabled showing dislikes. This site is based on that data source. Thanks guys.

The list of YouTube IDs is segmented based on likes, year and language and saved as text files. Thus, it only takes ~50GB space and can be quickly searched and added to. The language is estimated based on the title, thanks to fasttext.

It also means, the view count is stale and more and more videos will be offline over time. But it's still pretty fun to see what's out there, without being influenced by your preferences, location and YouTubes algorithm.
